Home Office Design Tips: To Make Your Workplace Beautiful, Functional & Ergonomic

Working from home seems popular trend for most of modern people. Home office gives us more opportunity for real comfort, efficiency and little pressure. Whether your home office is designed for daily office life, occasional telecommute, or just a room for organizing your staff, you deserve more than a neat desk and extra chair. Home office to some degree reflects the comfort of the rest of your home and even affect the whole style of your home decor. Once nicely decorated as well as functionally and ergonomically concerned, it can be a charming place that you can burn the midnight oil there without feeling depressed or tired.

There is a need to make our home office different from the office of the company. Here are some tips for designing your home office and making it more nice, functional or ergonomic.

For ideal home office design, first we need to think about some questions as follows. How often will we use the office? What possible activities we will perform in the office? Will we open our home office to our guests? What type of materials will we store in this room? What kind of furniture, equipment or accessories shall we add to the home office? We need to ask us more questions so that the home office design easier.

Generally, comfort is a priority for home office. As for comfort, we may consider the feature of ergonomics of our home office design. We need to choose ergonomic office chairs, ergonomic computer peripherals, etc.

Style comes second because if the home office is designed similar to the corporate office which is characterized by gray, white or such monotonous hues and furniture, it will convey a sense of “forbidden”, depression, dullness. We need to add color and style to our home office by choosing some colored furniture or office items, raising some green plants or flowers in the office, adding more pieces of art and such things to make it full of fun and vigor.

Function is also important, though sometimes ignored by most home office designers. It is home office where we perform some work there. Stylish sofa is attractive, but maybe it is not functional when it is used as seat. Various decorative lights are nice and can make the office vibe casual or inviting, but they may divert our engagement in the work.

Here are some other important parts that we need to consider whatever style of our home office will be.

We need to add some necessary equipment to maximize the function of our home office. We can get some USB hubs for better organization of cables on the desk. Invest in the fastest and newest equipment for higher efficiency. But never pay for the equipment that we will not use every day.

Lighting is essential for good home office. Make the best use of natural light and also well use general and task lighting for enough brightness. The overly low light levels may produce negative psychological effects such as depression. The ideal lighting is supposed to be able to cast a yellow-best. Never make the overhead lighting directly project onto the computer screen because the glare may result in eyestrain.

Make sure the furniture or office items, especially the chair at your home office is ergonomic one. Prolonged sitting is bad to our back, but we still need to do something for lessening the harms to our back. We need ergonomic chairs, ergonomic monitors, or even ergonomic mice.

Finally, color for home office is also a difficult part of office design. Colors may affect us emotionally and physically. Blue, green, and violet are viewed as cool colors, which may evoke feelings of peace and relaxation. Blue, ideal color for bedroom, is not suitable for office because it may lull us to sleep. Green is ideal color for office because it can generate calm and fresh emotions, which is also beneficial for better engagement and vitality. Yellow is a kind of attention-grabbing color, but when it is applied in the office, it may cause anxiety. Red is energetic and stirring, but usually right as accents only. For ideal home office colors, we can also choose white, ivory or gray as accent colors.

What We Need to Consider When Choosing Office Chairs for Home Office?

What type of chairs are you using now in your home office? Is it a well selected chair or just a chair that you even use it when you enjoy the dinner? Chair for our home office is still an investment especially for those who have home based business or who have to sit on the chair for long hours.

home office chair

For less body aches or back issues after prolonged sitting in the home office, it is necessary to consider some factors when we choose a new home office chair or it is necessary to update the chair which is not comfortable we are using now.

How frequent you have to sit at your home office?

Do you often have to sit in the office chair for a long period of time dealing with a lot of computer work or answering phone calls? Or you have to sit in front of your desk many times a day, though each time the sitting does not last too long? You need an ergonomic chair that offers maximum comfort and good support. It is really important to get a quality ergonomic chair for comfortable sitting if we sit in the home office too frequently. Wrong support or no support from the poor chairs may easily cause back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain or tail bone pain, which may eventually affect our productivity and we may hardly focus at our work. If we only need to sit in the chair for email-checking time, it does not matter as for whatever chair we choose.

Balance Style and Comfort of Home Office Chairs

Unlike the chairs in the corporate workplace, chair at our own home office can be something personal. Besides the basic function of being adjusted based on our comfort level or other needs such as height, home office chair needs to be nice, for it can be a decoration for our office. Since there are a lot of chair types available, we can choose kneeling chair or ball chairs that combine style and comfort well. Or choose ball chairs that bring us comfort and still look cool.

Consider Proper Sitting Posture

Working at corporate office, we may be pressured to sit in a standard posture. Yet when we work at home, we feel relaxed and sometimes we just sit in a position as long as we feel comfortable. But the posture can be wrong or harmful. To avoid poor posture, we need to choose chairs with arms and adjustable height. If our work involves a lot of keyboard activities, we can choose a chair without arm. If we have to write a lot of things, choose a chair that can offer us proper hand alignment with the desk so that we can avoid hand pain.

Tips on Bringing Warmth to Home Office in Cold Winter

Winter comes and the blues of the depressed season may have crept into your home office. But we can not let it hold us hostage for a very long time. We don’t have to let us walk into the cold home office each day. We can spruce up the home office and add some life or even warmth into it so as to fight back any monotony, tiredness or blues. We need to do something to keep a constantly positive and joyful feeling when winter starts knocking at the door. Here are some tips to bring in warm atmosphere to our home office.

Embrace Natural Light

Embracing more natural light in home office is one of the easiest way to make the office full of positive and warm atmosphere. This is also an effective way to dispel any dismal feeling of winter from our home office. Just let natural light in as long as we sit in the office and there is any sunshine. Move our desk in front of the window for more warm natural light. If the light is very strong, just use some curtains or neutral colored blinds. Natural light can improve our mood better than the decorative light or lamps inside.

Change Office Chairs Specially for Winter

Winter comes and when we work in the home office, we need a special chair for warmth. Try to change the wooden chair used during summertime with leather office chair or add more cushions or thick wool covers to the chair when temperatures drop. For the sake of health, we use ergonomic chair. If we choose orange or other warm colored ergonomic chair instead of black one, maybe we can feel extra warmth when we see it in the office.

Kick Away Blues with More Fresh Plants

We can kick away the blues by bringing in more plants into home office. There must be a lot of space in our office for the vigorous plant. We can also raise some flowers in our home office, not only for the fresh smell but for the cheerful look. The plants can easily give the space a spring look and make us forget the dull winter time. Working in the home office, we will surely be delighted to see the green foliage and colorful buds visually appealing. They are all unique in bringing in warmth into our home office in winter. Just choose some sweet-smelling plants and take some care of them. Let the natural colors warm up the office.

Add Fabrics & Accent Pieces in Office

Fabrics or accent pieces are also very useful items to making the warm feel of our home office. Choose the curtains of light vibrant color for a change. Enhance a certain area with some accent pieces. Hang some nice wreath on the home office door. If possible, add some Christmas tree light of right size in the home office for warm glow, especially during night when you have to work.

But if the space for the room is not determined, we may even finally set up a home office with more than the space we actually need. There is no need to set up an executive suit at our home.

A home office on a budget is usually a place with limited space, necessary furniture and quiet environment where we can work productively. It can be set up anywhere available , such as closets, laundry rooms, kitchen nooks, unused areas at home. Choose the place with enough space and then add things we need to it.

Home Office Desk

For a practical home office, a desk is indispensable. We may perform a lot of tasks by the desk. Now desks come in various shapes, materials, prices, etc. Think about our need before making any choice. For an affordable desk, there are a few options. If you like, try to make a desk from a solid wooden door, just as the Amazon employees do.

Choose the surface of the desk and then paint it in a color that you like. Or buy the desk made from laminated materials. Get a desk of the darkest color. Even though it looks cheap, the dark colored desk will fade into the background and will not catch any attention. For a home office with very limited space, get a multi-functional desk that not only occupies less space, but also helps store more of your stuff. In this way, you may just save the dollars for an additional cabinet.

Ergonomic Office Chair

Working from home, we still have to spend hours by the desk. Prolonged sitting is always not comfortable. For maximum comfort, we need to get an ergonomic chair. Those high end leather ergonomic chairs usually cost too much. Yet we can still get ergonomic chair, by either searching those affordable ergonomic chair from reliable office supplier, or getting a secondhand ergonomic chairs from flea markets or garage sales. If the used chairs do not look nice or are in poor shape, just do some change to it and make it look new.

Storage

Good storage is necessary for home office for it helps better organize our stuff and keep our items at our fingertips. For good productivity, we need such clutter free storage place. For a budget home office, we can construct a cabinet by ourselves after getting necessary materials from local hardware store. Or we just buy used cabinets and then spruce them up with a coat of paint.

Decorating a home office doesn't have to be expensive, but it does require some imagination! Find a suitable space and make comfort as priority. With a little creativity, add the necessary furniture to make the office look stylish, practical and still, keep everything within our budget.
